02: Developing an eye for product

A data room was once a physical space where companies stored and shared confidential documents. As businesses moved from paper to cloud, these physical data rooms also went digital. Today, when it comes to managing large volumes of sensitive information online, many people believe the answer is: more security. But even with these layers, breaches still happen—sometimes simply because the information is shared with the wrong person.

Firmex realized that in a world where sharing information drives the buying, selling, and merging of companies, routine tasks had become high stakes. The key insight came when we learned that our customers were less worried about better security features and more focused on knowing what others were doing with their information. This discovery helped us refine our platform to empower users to easily monitor and control the flow of information, giving them the peace of mind they needed to focus on their work.

  • Firmex is a platform that helps businesses share confidential documents for high-stake transactions.

I led design and research of their Virtual Data Room (VDR) platform while also helping design and pilot a new file-sharing product with new and existing customers.
